Energy think-tank Zero Emissions welcomes the appointment of South Australian Mark Butler as minister to the Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population, Communities and Climate Change portfolios.
"Mark Butler, a South Australia is a great choice for furthering renewable energy and energy efficiency policy in Australia," said Matthew Wright Executive Director of energy security think-tank Zero Emissions.
"South Australia is a world leader when it comes to renewable energy technology, If Minister Butler can take the experience in South Australia which now has lower electricity bills thanks to solar and wind as a model for the rest of the country then he will trully make Australia a safer, healthier, more secure and better place for all Australians.
"His state has more wind turbines per person than almost any other country or region around the world. It also leads Australia on solar panel systems with more than twenty percent of households owning a rooftop solar system.
"Mark Butler is from the sunrise state, the state that could claim the sunshine state title from Queensland with its fantastic renewable energy resources, policies and strong industry.
"We look forward to seeing Mark Butler expanding the Renewable Energy Target towards a 100% renewable energy future and backing key solar storage technologies.
"There is an opportunity to stimulate an industry delivering daytime solar at night with home based solar storage. And there is a really exciting opportunity to fast track an announcement to build five solar thermal with storage plants starting in Port Augusta, based on the SolarReserve 110MWe baseload solar plant in Nevada.
"We look forward to Mark Butler's contribution in the Environment, Climate and Energy space and hope that he is able to make some serious headway into delivering a 21st century renewable powered clean-tech economy. said Matthew Wright
